Love craft beer? Albuquerque has a surprisingly robust beer scene, with dozens of award-winning breweries located throughout the city. There are hundreds of New Mexico-inspired craft beers to sample, along with creative food offerings and unique taprooms and beer gardens to enjoy them in. Local New Mexican beers are also served in many restaurants throughout the city and beyond. What to get: Double White, Cholo Stout, Desert Fog

Founded in 2008, Marble Brewery has won a string of accolades in the past decade, including a gold medal for their best-selling Double White Belgian and Brewer of the Year at the Great American Beer Festival. They currently have three taproom locations in Albuquerque, located downtown, on the westside, and in the northeast heights. In addition to classics like the Double White, a Belgian-inspired wheat ale, Marble offers a rotating selection of classic and seasonal craft-brewed beer, with standouts like their Cholo Stout and Desert Fog IPA. They’ve also recently expanded their offerings to include hard seltzer, with thirst-quenching flavors like Raspberry Lime and Cucumber Lime.

Founded in 1999, Tractor Brewing Co. has made its home in Albuquerque since 2014. With four locations in the city and one in nearby Los Lunas, good beer is never far away. No matter what you like to drink, there’s sure to be a beer to please your palate, with creative favorites like Hay Maker Honey Wheat (made with real New Mexican honey,) New Mexican Lager, and Milk Mustachio Stout. Tractor also offers rotating seasonal brews like Pumpkin Cider and Chocolate Milk Stout.

Each year, Tractor Brewing Co. also participates in Beer for a Better Burque, partnering with different nonprofits every year to support them and raise funds through events, fundraising, and specialty-crafted brews. In 2020, they’re partnering with Carrie Tingley Hospital Foundation, Transgender Resource Center of New Mexico, Partnership for Community Action, and Blackout Theatre Company - so you can rest assured that every sip is going toward a good cause!

3. La Cumbre

What to get: Elevated IPA, Project Dank, Slife of Hefen

La Cumbre’s motto is “New Mexican Beers at Their Peak” - and we really can’t argue with that. La Cumbre is probably best known for its award-winning Elevated IPA, a super-charged, hop-forward IPA with a serious kick. You can find the Elevated IPA not only at La Cumbre’s two Albuquerque taprooms, but also served in restaurants throughout the city and in Santa Fe. If you’re a dedicated hop fanatic, be sure to also check out La Cumbre’s Project Dank, and ever-changing brew with a special focus on hopped-up recipes. If you’re not an IPA fan, La Cumbre also offers an impressive curated selection of other craft brews, including their Slice of Hefen Bavarian-inspired wheat ale, and a crowd-pleasing light lager simply dubbed Beer.

Founded in 2012 in Albuquerque, Bosque Brewing is proud of its strong New Mexico roots. The company is named after Albuquerque’s scenic bosque, a stretch of lush cottonwood forest along the banks of Rio Grande. The brewery has two locations in Albuquerque, and one location in nearby Bernalillo. They also have three locations in Las Cruces. Check out their fan-favorite Elephants on Parade, a tart, sweet ale flavored with raspberry puree, or their Open Space Haze, a hazy IPA with soft tropical notes. In addition to year-round staples, Bosque also offers a rotating selection of seasonal specials, many of which vary from taproom to taproom.

Okay, so Santa Fe Brewing isn’t technically based in Albuquerque - but they do have a taproom in the city! One of the best breweries in Santa Fe, Santa Fe Brewing was established in 1988 and prides itself on being New Mexico’s original craft brewery. Along with locations in Santa Fe and Eldorado, Santa Fe Brewing also serves up delicious craft beer in ABQ. Their Albuquerque location is located in Green Jeans Farmery, a complex showcasing original New Mexico restaurants and retail shops. Check out their signature Santa Fe Pale Ale, or their hopped-up 7K IPA. If you’re in the mood for something a little stronger, order their Chicken Killer Barley Wine - a British-style barley wine with 10% ABV.

If you’re a craft beer fanatic, New Mexico has plenty to offer. Relax and unwind with a specialty brew at Albuquerque’s many taprooms, or take a beer or two with you to celebrate on the summit of your next hike. New Mexican breweries are always working to experiment with and expand their offerings, in recent years offering hard ciders and seltzers in addition to classic craft brews.
